I first met winemaker Michael Dhillon, of Bindi Wines back in 1996 when I did vintage at a nearby winery in the Macedon Ranges. Michael's fanatical pursuit of perfection culminated in him being recognised as Winemaker of the Year for 2022 in James Halliday's Annual Wine Companion Awards. I've enjoyed many of Michael's wines over the years and am pleased to still have a few (but not enough!) of them in my cellar.
Michael produces sublime chardonnay and pinot noir from his own vineyards, as well as a shiraz from Heathcote, and most recently a Col Mountain grenache.
"Block 5 has had yields reduced by around 30% in recent years to maximise quality on a yield per vine basis. Since 2020 crops have averaged 35% to 50% lower due to seasonal factors. What has always been a very small production wine has become even more so! Which is rather a shame as the vines are now over 30 years old and the Block 5 site is producing more beautiful wines than ever.
The 2022 Block 5 shows fragrance and fruit purity. There is rhubarb, red plum and cherry, raspberry and spice. The palate is initially supple then fleshes out to become mouthfilling. The interplay of fruit weight and tannin created a seamless, long finish. Another seven years will seem more complexity develop and it will continue to drink well beyond."
