Massolino was founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, near the picturesque medieval village of Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmont, Italy. Surrounding the village is one of the best sub-zones of Barolo and it’s here the estate’s greatest asset, its prized vineyards sit. The estate recently purchased more vineyards which now total around 100 acres.
Massolino regularly receives praise from high profile critics, including Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and the estate was awarded ‘Winery of the Year 2010’ by the influential US based Wine & Spirits Magazine.
This wine is 100% nebbiolo sourced from the estate's younger vines, making it kind of like a declassified Barolo. Having said that, it spends less time (15 months) in oak compared to the estate's Barolo (24 months), which makes it more approachable now.
"From a classical vintage that spotlighted perfume, purity and freshness, this is a strikingly pretty wine: wonderfully vibrant and perfumed with great acidity and energy and aromas and flavours that suggest rose, cranberry, blackberry and all kinds of spice. Super drinking already."
Importer's notes.
"Cherry, liquorice, fragrant too, offering juicy red fruit, gentle tannin grip, lovely freshness set in a medium-bodied, but tightly structured frame. There’s a little blood orange and aniseed in the mix too. Very nice. Yum."
93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
