Despite the wines of Pomerol not being included in the famous 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, nor having been subsequently classified, Château Pétrus is widley regarded not only as the finest wine of the appellation, but also one of the finest of Bordeaux.
Pétrus is owned by négociant Jean-Francois Moueix. The estate's 11.5ha vineyard sits at 40 metres elevation, making it the highest on the Pomerol plateau. Stephen Brook's terrific book 'The Complete Bordeaux' (3rd Edition 2017) has plantings at 97% merlot and 3% cabernet franc, although he notes that cabernet franc hardly ever enters the final blend, which is usually 100% merlot. The vineyard is renowned for its famous "buttonhole" of blue clay.
Provenance is the most important thing when buying a wine like this. The wine was purchased en-primeur and has been stored in a temperature controlled cabinet since it's arrival.
Chateau Petrus 2021 reviews.
"Beautiful length and depth here for the vintage, with blackberry, raspberry and blueberry character. Cloves and sandalwood, too. Full and layered. Ripe and ample, yet balanced and fresh. Crunchy and very bright."
98/99 points, James Suckling, May 2022.
