How can you not love Moscato d'Asti. Slightly fizzy, sweet, fresh, clean and light. It's a lovely dessert wine made from the moscato bianco grape, produced in the province of Asti, which is within the region of Piedmont, up in the North West of Italy.
What I like about Moscato is that they are low in alcohol, usually around 5%. This gives them a refreshing, light, lifted quality - so much better than that slow descent into queasiness, brought on by a rich, red table wine, followed by a rich, sweet dessert wine, followed by an even more alcoholic fortifed.
Massolino is one of Barolo's top producers, but also makes tiny quantities of this exquisite Moscato d'Asti.
"Drawn from hand-harvested grapes, a good portion of the vines are rooted in the prime calcareous soils of Serralunga. Massolino's Moscato is more savoury and complex than the more typical examples (yet every bit as delicious). As always, this is bursting with wonderful, complex fruit--chamomile, pear, citrus and acacia flower--but it finishes chalky, crisp and with a twist of sage leaf. Impossible to stop drinking!"
