I am a big fan of the wines of Yarra Yering, especially since Sarah began weaving her magic as winemaker in 2013. Sarah was recognised for her excellence when she became the first woman to win the prestigious James Halliday Winemaker of the Year award in 2017.

Sarah and Yarra Yering went on to be awarded:
Winemaker of the Year in 2021, by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine.
Winery of the Year 2021 by Huon Hooke‚Äôs The Real Review.
James Halliday Winery of the Year 2022 and in the same year Wine of the Year, the first time a winery has ever won the 2 major accolades in the one year.
And most recenlty, Winery of the Year 2024 (again) by Huon Hooke‚Äôs The Real Review.

Incredbile!

"Yarra Yering wines have always been very good, but under the current management, they have hit new heights. Sarah Crowe is an outstanding winemaker. Without any fanfare (she) puts out a bevy of fabulous wines year after year."
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, June 2019.

No. 2 is a northern Rhone (think Cote Rotie) inspired shiraz blend which in 2022 was made up of 96% shiraz, 2% marsanne, 2% mataro and 0.5% viognier. It's 13.5% alcohol. Langton's 7th Classification saw it promoted to‚ "Excellent", finally.

I have always seen this as an unsung hero of a wine. For some reason the No.2 has never gained the same following as the No.1. My theory on this is that people associate the numbers as some sort of quality hierarchy. But the No.2 was simply the second blend that Dr Carrodus put together and I'm told there was no particular reason it was done in this order.

For anyne who loves cool climate shiraz. Here it is!

Red Wine of the Year, Halliday Wine Companion 2025

Award Winning Varietal‚ Shiraz‚ Halliday Wine Companion 2025

""Fermented with whole berries and matured in barriques (25 per cent new). A brilliant crimson red. In fact, a brilliant Dry Red Wine No. 2. There's a little reduction when first poured but it doesn't take long for this to reveal a complex amalgam of red and black fruits, iodine, graphite and melted, dark licorice. Fleshier and more refined and seductive than last year's version. Incredibly svelte tannins. Supremely balanced. I reckon Yarra Yering's founder, Dr Bailey Carrodus, would be chuffed with this. Drink 2024-2034.""
99 points, Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine Companion.
