John Hughes, aka The Riesking Freak, reckons 2017 was his best vintage ever. Here's what he had to say about it:
“Rieslingfreak’s best vintage ever!! The 2017 Vintage, has to be one of the most exciting vintages I have ever seen with Riesling, and I am going as far to say it is the Riesling Vintage of the Century thus far. With a long and cool spring and summer, and the generosity of rain from Mother Nature, the vintage was set for the Riesling vineyards. Riesling is one variety that performs particularly well under cool and wet weather conditions. As a result, we had ample water to the vines creating large canopies, big bunches and big berries - the perfect recipe for great Riesling.”
The Rieslingfreak No. 4 is a dry style with the fruit coming from two vineyards in a mecca of Australian Riesling, the Eden Valley, which generally produces lighter, more delicate and floral rieslings than the Clare.
I put a few cases of the No. 4 2017 aside at time of release and am now plesaed to be able to offer them to you with a few years age.
“The wine is pale straw in colour, and has aromas of vibrant lemon and limes, sweet spice and almond blossom. The palate is full of lemons, grapefruit and apples. The wine drinks well now, but will reward with long term cellaring.”
