Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is located in the appellation of Pauillac on the left (western) bank of the Gironde Estuary. Mouton is one of five First Growths, the other four being Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion.
While vineyards have been on the site for centuries, it was not until 1853 that Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the banking dynasty, purchased the languishing estate and set about improving it significantly. At the time of the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, Mouton was not included as a First Growth. It was the dogged efforts of Baron Philippe de Rothschild that saw the estate finally attain this classification in 1973. Baron Philippe was also responsible for initiating the annual commissioning of a famous contemporary artist to design a label, a feature that’s became a hallmark of the estate.
The estate comprises 91ha, of which 84ha is red (80% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit Verdot) and 7ha white (50% semillon, 48% sauvignon blanc & sauvignon gris, and 2% Muscadelle).
Jane Anson MW describes the wine style of Château Mouton Rothschild as "silky texture, caressing tannins and gourmet."
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 Composition
The 2018 Mouton-Rothschild is a blend of 86% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, and 2% cabernet franc. The wine is 13.8% alcohol. The label is the work of Chinese artist and writer Xu Bing. This wine was purchased en-primeur and arrived in August 2021. Since then it has been stored in a temperature controlled cabinet.
