Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2 2021
I tried this wine with winemaker Sarah Crowe in April '24 and absolutely loved it.
I’m a big fan of the wines of Yarra Yering, especially since Sarah began weaving her magic as winemaker in 2013. Sarah was recognised for her excellence when she became the first woman to win the prestigious James Halliday Winemaker of the Year award in 2017.
Sarah and Yarra Yering went on to be awarded:
Winemaker of the Year in 2021, by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine.
Winery of the Year 2021 by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review.
James Halliday Winery of the Year 2022 and in the same year Wine of the Year, the first time a winery has ever won the 2 major accolades in the one year.
And most recenlty, Winery of the Year 2024 (again) by Huon Hooke’s The Real Review.
Incredbile!
“Yarra Yering wines have always been very good, but under the current management, they have hit new heights. Sarah Crowe is an outstanding winemaker…. Without any fanfare (she) puts out a bevy of fabulous wines year after year.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, June 2019.
No. 2 is a northern Rhône (think Côte Rôtie) inspired shiraz blend which in 2021 was made up of 96% shiraz, 2% viognier, 1% marsanne and 1% mataro. It’s 14% alcohol. Langton’s 7th Classification saw it promoted to ‘excellent’… finally.
I’ve always seen this as an unsung hero of a wine. For some reason the No.2 has never gained the same following as the No.1. My theory on this is that people associate the numbers as some sort of quality hierarchy. But the No.2 was simply the second blend that Dr Carrodus put together and I’m told there was no particular reason it was done in this order.
For anyne who loves cool climate shiraz. Here it is!
"A complex and layered wine; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is a melting pot of violets, plums, savoury spices and a whiff of bramble and five spice. Moderate in weight; the summer pudding fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour interest. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue. Firm yet fine tannins ably support the fruit and texture drive the palate. This one is hard to put in a box, there is so much to love."
Winemaker's notes.
"The wine is medium-full bodied and it has intensity and drive without excessive weight, the tannins chiming in with drying grip and sapidity as it drives long on the finish and resonates through its authoritative aftertaste. Superb."
98 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review.
"An interesting contrast between this, the Underhill Shiraz and the Carrodus Shiraz, the No. 2 red may end up being the most long-lived of this terrific trio in 2021."
96 points, Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion.
