Chateau Phelan Segur 2019 History
In the late 1770s young Irishman Bernard O'Phelan set out from Tipperary to set himself up in Bordeaux. What started with his acquistion of Sugur de Cabarnac in 1810, eventaully led via various marriages, mergers and sales, to the current owner, Belgian Philippe Van de Vyvere, purchasing in 2017, what had been known since the beginning of the 20th century as Chataeu Phelan Segur.
The estate is located in the left bank (west) appellation of Saint-Estephe, bordering Chataeu Calon-Segur and Chateau Montrose. Vineyards cover 70ha, with cabernet sauvigon accounting for 58%, merlot 39%, and cabermet franc and petit verdot 1.5% each.
The 2019 Chateau Phelan Segur is made up of 56% cabernet sauvignon, 42%merlot and 2% cabernet franc. This wine was purchased en-primeur and arrived in August 2022. Since then it has been stored in a temperature controlled cabinet.
Chateau Phelan Segur 2019 Reviews
"The Chateau Phelan Segur 2019 is a very classically structured Bordeaux with blackcurrant, walnut, cedar and hints of toasted oak. It’s reserved now, but shows very serious, polished tannins. Persistent and powerful with fantastic length. Very precise. Try after 2025."
96 points, James Suckling, December 2021.
"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Phelan Segur leaps with notes of redcurrant, blackcurrant cordial, and black cherries plus hints of fragrant earth, menthol, pencil shavings, and violets with a waft of anise. Medium to full-bodied with bags of grace and elegance, featuring layers of vibrant red and black fruits with floral accents and supported by satiny, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant."
95+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, May 2022
"Is this the most over-performing estate in the Médoc? Director Véronique Dausse would surely riposte that it's simply performing at the level to which its well-situated vineyards and detail-oriented team entitle it; but in any case, the 2019 Phélan Ségur is a brilliant wine. Offering up aromas of cassis, sweet wild berries, rose petals, violets, licorice and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. This is another 2019 that en primeur purchasers can feel very pleased with. Drink Date 2027 - 2055"
94+ points, William Kelley, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, April 2022.
