I tried this wine with the Vincent Wallays, export director of Chanson, in Sydney in October 2022. It was one of my picks.
Notes from the estate:
Site : Chanson is one of the major owners of Clos des Mouches with a vineyard of 4.5 hectares. A sunny Terroir which benefits from an ideal location on the hill at the southern end of the vineyards of Beaune on a spur pointing toward Pommard . A plot of 2 hectares on the upper side of the hill is planted with Chardonnay on a limestone subsoil covered with sand.
The Vintage 2020 : After a very mild winter, spring arrived with warm temperatures in March which engendered a very quick and sustained growth of the vines. After a very short frost episode early May with no consequence in the vineyards, a mild weather with some rains settled down until end of June. Summer was punctuated in July by several and quite long heat waves. Vineyards with a clay soil were less affected by the low level of rainfalls during spring and by the summer heat. The harvest in Burgundy started around August 20, which was historically early for the region. At Chanson, they started on August 24 under a bright sunshine. 2020 white wines are showing a lot of energy, with a very precise texture and a beautiful aromatic combination of exotic fruit mixed with yellow fleshed fruit and toasted bread.
Tasting : Pale gold colour. Intense aromas of exotic fruit (pineapple) mixed with a light caramel note (tarte tatin). Delicate minerality. Complex and delicate. A sunny wine with a tight texture. Long and refreshing aftertaste with a subtle minerality.
"Rather winning floral perfume and distinctly edgy acidity – quite a novelty in 2020! Lots of texture but fruit is ripened to the right level too. Quite youthful but the elements seem well balanced."
